about
Our take and our vision on Ukrainian folk song Shchedryk. Fusing traditional Slavic sounds with metal we explore the song’s pagan origins.
"Shchedryk" is a Ukrainian shchedrivka (a New Year’s song) which has pre-Christian origins. It was associated with the coming New Year which in Ukraine before the introduction of Christianity was originally celebrated in April.
The song tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to proclaim the plentiful and bountiful year that the family will have. The swallow is a herald of spring coming. The title is derived from the Ukrainian word for “bountiful”.
